UNITED NATIONS: On Thursday, the UN General Assembly urged the creation of a global set of regulations to handle the advantages and disadvantages of artificial intelligence.
Several nations have co-sponsored the resolution, which was unanimously approved. It emphasizes the need for regulations “to promote safe, secure, and trustworthy artificial intelligence systems,” but it does not address military AI.
Overall, the resolution—drafted by the US—calls for extra caution “to bridge the artificial intelligence and other digital divides between and within countries” and emphasizes more of the beneficial aspects of technology. In order to fulfill the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, which aim to guarantee a brighter future for humanity by 2030, it also aims “to promote, not hinder, digital transformation and equitable access” to AI.
“There is a unique opportunity for member states to meet this critical moment with collective action as AI technologies develop rapidly,” US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said earlier, reiterating a joint statement from the dozens of co-sponsor nations.
An expert at the International Crisis Group named Richard Gowan claims that the US is purposefully trying to gain favor with less developed countries by emphasizing development. He claimed that discussing how AI may advance emerging nations is simpler than taking on security and safety issues head-on as a first step.
