LAHORE: Former first lady Kulsoom Nawaz will be laid to rest on Friday after her casket reached the provincial capital earlier in the day.
Kulsoom breathed her last on Tuesday after a protracted battle with cancer. Brother-in-law Shehbaz Sharif, daughter Asma Nawaz, sons of Hussain Nawaz and other Sharif family members accompanied the body from London to Lahore on a Pakistan International Airlines flight.
The casket was transported to Sharif Medical Complex amid tight security. Kulsoom’s funeral prayers, led by renowned cleric Tariq Jameel, will be offered at 5pm.
A large number of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders and workers, including leaders of other political parties, are expected to attend the funeral prayers of the former first lady. She will be laid to rest at the Sharif family graveyard in Jati Umra.
Chief Minister Punjab Usman Buzdar, Governor Punjab Chaudhry Sarwar, and senior leaders of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) will also participate in the funeral procession. Speaker Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, Chaudhry Shujaat, Jamaat-e-Islami chief Sirajul Haq and Liaquat Baloch are also expected to attend the funeral.
On Thursday, hundreds attended Kulsoom’s funeral prayers held at Regent Park mosque in London. The final prayers for Kulsoom were attended by sons Hassan and Hussain, who are unable to travel to Pakistan after being declared absconders in the accountability trial following the Panamagate verdict.
