Are you bored at home and don’t have anything better to do? Then why not play a little game of ‘guess that doodle’ with Quick Draw, Google’s fast-learning, neural network-based, artificial intelligence.
What is Quick Draw? To put it in layman’s terms, it’s Google’s way of making machines think more human-like. In the not so distant past, Google achieved astounding results with its deep-learning engines.
We can easily recall how the company partnered up with Blizzard in order to implement DeepMind in StarCraft 2. But mastering a couple of games of Go, and wreaking havoc in real-time strategy games aren’t as challenging as trying to guess what someone drew on a screen, especially if that person has the drawing skills of a 3-year old.
But the AI has to learn, one way or another what it truly means to interact with humans. And what better to do it than by playing guessing games. So, to this end, Google has recently launched a Web-based application called ‘Quick Draw!’.
The app is very similar to other doodle applications such as Paper for iOS and Bamboo Paper for Android. However, Quick Draw features Google’s deep-learning, neural-based AI, whose purpose in this picture is to guess what the user is drawing.
For us, guessing what someone drew is very easy since we have the capacity to approximate forms or to use our intuition in order to make the assessment. On the other hand, Google’s AI doesn’t have that luxury. For it, it all comes down to trial and error.
So, how do you play the Quick Draw game? The first thing you’ll need to do is to head over to Quick Draw’s official website. The application will then tell you what to draw, and you will have 20 seconds to sketch your masterpiece.
During this time, the AI will try to guess your drawing. If your drawing skills are good, then the app won’t have any problem recognizing what’s in the picture. On the other hand, if your doodles are not that great, the AI will have trouble approximating its form and will give up eventually.
The game ends when you’re finished drawing your sixth picture. In the end, Quick Draw will showcase your drawings in a gallery, and you can use this opportunity to review guessing accuracy. In most cases, the AI won’t have a clue about what you’re drawing but do try to keep in mind that it’s still learning.
