Army Chief General Raheel Sharif Friday (today) called requested Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s assistance for the safe recovery of the kidnapped crew aboard a Punjab government helicopter which crashed in Afghanistan Thursday night.

Earlier today, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani instructed security forces to recover crew members of Punjab government’s helicopter which crash-landed in eastern Afghanistan on Thursday, his special envoy for Pakistan Ambassador Omar Zakhilwal said.
Asim Bajwa earlier confirmed that seven people were on board the helicopter including retired military officers and a Russian navigator.
The ambassador said the helicopter either caught fire after the crash-landing or was damaged beyond repair. “The Taliban have taken the crew to Wach Lagad area after the helicopter went down at a place called Matrai.”
The Army chief on Thursday night also called Commander Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan General Nicolson and asked him to help in the recovery of the helicopter crew. General Nicholson assured Gen Raheel of all possible help in the matter.
The Afghan government and Afghan National Army authorities had also been contacted for assistance regarding the recovery of the crew members, the DG ISPR said earlier.
At least seven people were held hostage by Afghan Taliban after a Punjab government helicopter made an emergency landing in Afghanistan over unknown reasons.
The helicopter MI-17 carrying six Pakistani engineers was travelling to Uzbekistan before it crash landed in Logar area of Afghanistan.
The plane was set on fire by the Afghan Taliban, who also held Pakistani officials and a Russian pilot hostage.
According to the reports, the plane was being sent to Uzbekistan for overhauling.
