ISLAMABAD: The country’s security czar has termed the airing of confessional videos of suspects during custody by law enforcement agencies as illegal and unethical.
Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan’s statement comes two days after Asif Ali Zardari’s close confidante Dr Asim Hussain accused former president’s foster brother Owais Muzaffar of being involved in corruption during Pakistan Peoples Party’s current government in Sindh.
Similarly, on Friday, security in-charge of MQM headquarters Nine-Zero Minhaj Qazi had named in a video some former members of the party of having a role in murdering Hakim Saeed in Karachi on October 17, 1998.
“We are writing a letter to the government of Sindh and asking it to probe which investigative institute is behind these cases,” Nisar said in a statement on Saturday.
“In a separate letter, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) is also being asked to formulate a code of conduct and procedure to eliminate such incidents,” it added.
Nisar went on to say that it is the authority of the courts to make judgment in such cases and media trial [of the suspects] must be avoided.
The interior minister added that unnecessarily release of such videos would weaken the prosecution rather than strengthening it.
