TOKYO– Corp. (7203.TO) is recalling 2.87 million vehicles worldwide, including the RAV4 sport-utility vehicle, over seatbelts that could be damaged in a crash, the auto maker said Thursday.
In North America, Toyota is recalling 1.3 million vehicles including certain RAV4 crossover SUVs made between July 2005 and August 2014. It is also recalling in areas including Europe and China, the auto maker said.
Some seatbelts on the second row of these vehicles could be damaged in a crash by coming into contact with the metal frame of the seat cushion, Toyota said. That means passengers could be injured because the seatbelts could be cut and separated, it said in an e-mail.
Toyota has received two reports of the seatbelt separating in a crash, it said. It said it was unable to determine whether anyone has died or been injured due to this problem.
Toyota said it will fix the metal frame by adding resin covers, a procedure that would take up to an hour.
