NEW DELHI: Hindu extremism continues in India and in the latest incident, ink was thrown at Indian Occupied Kashmir (IoK) MLA Engineer Rashid here on Monday.
The independent MLA was attacked over his stance on the beef ban issue. On October 07 he had been beaten up by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members in the IoK Assembly a day after he had reportedly hosted a ‘beef party’.
Speaking to the media after the incident, Engineer Rashid asked if this was Modi’s India or Gandhi’s.
A spokesman for India’s opposition Congress Party condemned the incident and said it was unacceptable.
According to reports in the Indian media two people have been arrested in connection with the attack on Engineer Rashid.
Hindu extremist group Shiv Sena has also been carrying out attacks in a wave of anti-Muslim and anti-Pakistan sentiment.
Today (Monday), Shiv Sena activists stormed the headquarters of the Indian cricket board in Mumbai and stopped a meeting between cricket officials from Pakistan and India. The hardline group also issued a threat to Pakistani umpire Aleem Dar to stop him from officiating the India-South Africa ODI match.
Last week, Shiv sena activists attacked Sudheendra Kulkarni, the organiser of a book launch in Mumbai for former Pakistan foreign minister Khurshid Kasuri, saying any engagement with Pakistan is unacceptable.
Earlier this month, threats from the extreme right-wing group led to organisers cancelling legendary Pakistani singer Ghulam Ali’s show in Mumbai despite the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) assuring that the event would not be stopped.
Shiv Sena co-governs the Indian state of Maharashtra with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP.
