KARACHI: Despite Pakistan being the third largest milk producer in the world, prices of milk in its biggest city are much higher than that of petrol.
Even though the government decreased prices of petroleum for the month of September, the “dairy mafia” has increased the price of fresh milk in Karachi, raising it as high as Rs90 per litre
While the control rate of fresh milk in the city is Rs70/litre, challenging the government’s writ, dairy farmers have decided to further increase the prices by as much as Rs6. Prior to the recent increase, fresh milk in the city was already being sold for Rs84/litre.
In some of the areas of the city, prices have gone up by Rs10 taking the price of dairy product to almost Rs94/litre.
According to sources, the decision to increase the price was taken during a meeting of dairy farmers on Sunday.
The meeting decided to increase the farm-rate of Rs2,765 per 10 gallons (37.50 litres) to Rs3,100.
