At least 20 buried alive in Manipur landslide

At least 20 villagers of Joumol village, located close to Myanmar border, have been buried alive in a landslide. Twelve houses in the village were swept away in the landslide which took place yesterday morning. There were 21 households and 96 people living in the small hamlet. By late evening the Assam Rifles had rescued eight villagers who had been buried and had given shelter to survivors from the village.
The national highway in Chandel district which connects Imphal city to the Indo-Myanmar border town of Moreh and further on to Myanmar has sunk at two points including at Paraolon where a battalion of the 6 Dogra Rifles were ambushed by militants earlier in June. Several houses belonging to Hollenjang, Wayang and Tuitung villages in Chandel district were also swept away in a series of landslides which have affected the area.
