ISLAMABAD: Indian prime minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday telephoned Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and felicitated him on arrival of the holy month of Ramazan and as a goodwill gesture announced to release Pakistani fishermen detained in India.
According to Pakistan PM House spokesman, PM Nawaz Sharif reciprocated his counterpart’s goodwill gesture by making a similar announcement of releasing Indian fishermen being detained in Pakistan.
Reports aired in Indian electronic media said the two leaders also had an exchange of views on bilateral relations, in the backdrop of tension created by hostile statements from New Delhi over the previous week.
The telephonic conversation between PM Nawaz and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi lasted for five minutes, the report said.
In a separate statement issued soon after the above conversation, PM Nawaz Sharif called for Pakistan and India to put behind past differences and move forward towards peace. “Bilateral differences must not be allowed to create hurdles in this regard,” he added.
He said the leaders of nations are like heads of families who undertake steps to prevent disputes and set their course that leads to peace.
The premier said leaders of nations ensure their protection from all catastrophes.
Narendra Modi’s statement in Bangladesh
Tension escalated between Pakistan and India following PM Narendra Modi’s statement, which he made during his recent visit to Bangladesh. He had accepted his country’s role in the fall of Dhaka.
