At least three people have been burned alive after an angry mob set fire to a Muslim village in eastern India in an apparent revenge attack.
More than 3000 people were involved in the rampage in Bihar state’s Muzaffarpur district on Sunday, authorities say.
The violence occurred after a 19-year-old boy from a Hindu community eloped with a Muslim girl from the village, district official Anupam Kumar said on Monday.
His body was found near the village on Sunday morning after which people stormed the settlement and began torching houses.
Kumar said 14 people had been arrested: 13 for rioting and one for the boy’s murder. Police had been deployed in the region to prevent further clashes.
‘The situation is tense but under control,’ Kumar said.
The Bihar government has ordered an inquiry and announced compensation of 500,000 rupees ($A8760) for the relatives of the deceased.
