KYIV: Ukraine claimed on Wednesday that it had destroyed a number of Iranian-made drones that Russian troops had launched at its capital during their most recent attack on Kyiv.
While Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky urged European leaders to support a court to try Russian officials, the Kremlin stated that fighting would not escalate over Christmas and the New Year.
Early in the morning, explosions rang out over a central Kyiv neighborhood. Later, witnesses saw law enforcement and emergency personnel inspecting metal fragments at a snow-covered impact site.
Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, said, “The terrorists started this morning with 13 Shaheds,” referring to the Iranian-made weapons.
He added, “All 13 were shot down,” urging residents to pay attention to the air raid sirens.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February and attempted to take over the capital, Kyiv has been the target of frequent aerial attacks and the sirens of air raids for nearly ten months.
However, the attacks have increased since Russia began systematically targeting Ukraine’s critical infrastructure in October, disrupting millions’ access to electricity, water, and heat.
The national energy provider Ukrenergo praised the “brilliant” work of the Ukrainian air defenses and stated that no energy infrastructure facilities were damaged in the drone attack on Wednesday.
Civilian ‘suffering’
Bridget Edge, the US representative in Ukraine, said via virtual entertainment that Kyiv could keep on depending on Washington’s supporting and that “more help is coming”.
It is evident that these attacks have only one objective: to make civilians suffer more, “said EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrel’s spokesman Peter Stano.
