Srinagar: Two civilians were killed and several others sustained injuries after Indian forces allegedly opened fire in Ganapora area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Saturday. The district administration has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident to be completed in 20 days.
SSP Shopian Sri Ram Ambarkar told GNS that Indian Army convoy came under heavy stone pelting at Ganapora area. The soldiers in retaliation opened few shots resulting in injuries to few youth, he said. “One of the injured has died and the condition of other injured is being ascertained”.
Meanwhile, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Shopian Dr Bashir told GNS that they received at least eight injured persons in the hospital. Two of the seriously wounded have succumbed to their injured, he said.
He said that one among the injured namely Rayees Wagay was referred to SKIMS Soura in critical conditions.
The deceased have been identified as Javid Bhat and Sohul Bhat.
Army’s Srinagar based defence spokesperson Col Rajesh Kalia said: “the details of the incident are being ascertained”
Meanwhile, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Baseer Ahmad Khan told GNS that deputy commissioner Shopian has been asked to probe into the incident. “The officer has been asked to complete the inquiry within 20 days,” he added. (GNS)
