A sixth Pakistan Super League team has been added to the league with the Schon Group buying a franchise that will be based out of Multan. Pakistan Cricket Board announced the development on Thursday (June 1). Schon Group will pay $5.2 million per year and the team will be based in Multan.
The board had announced the addition of a new team in April this year and the deadline to send in proposals was May 30.
PCB wanted to add another team for the second season but their contract with the five franchises – Lahore Qalandars, Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi – meant they couldn’t take the proposal forward. The team owners opposed the addition of another team considering a revenue cut from the central revenue pool.
With the increase in teams, the number of matches will also go up from 24 to 34. Najam Sethi, the league’s chairman, is also aiming to have at least eight matches in Pakistan. The final of the 2017 edition was played in Lahore amid high security, making Sethi believe they can host more matches in the country.
