After skimming through the 5533 complaints, one can find what the people of Pakistan want from the Pakistani Media; in fact, you can just check the first 10 complaints against GEO news and it will clearly illustrate what the people of Pakistan want.
These complaints say that this channel should be banned because
- It is propagating negativity
- Material of the channel is against the Pakistan Army
- Material of the channel is against the teachings of Islam
- it against the cultural ethics of Pakistan
- Promoting Indian content
- And getting fundings from foreign countries (quoted Mubashar Luqman Show)
These are the main complaints, and these are the limitations that the people of Pakistan think should be applied on the channels, and none of them endangers the freedom of the press. In the light of these complaints, the following are the few simple things that the people of Pakistan expect from our mainstream media.
- Patriotism, Nationalism; their work should be for the betterment of Pakistan, not for the betterment of the channel alone. Our channels should consider the view of our government and our Army on any of the issues as the view of Pakistan whenever there is a problem between Pakistan and any other country. Other countries’ views, which will be definitely different from the Pakistani view, should not be propagated in the name of freedom of the press.
- Respect for Pakistan Army (Security Forces), as by the constitution of Pakistan.
- Use their freedom within the limits of Islamic teachings. Stop confusing people on Islamic issues and stop glamorizing Islam with Aamir Liaqat kind of shows. If you need Islamic point of view on a certain issue, contact a qualified Aalim who has command on the Islamic issues rather than contacting Aamir Liaqat, Veena Malik or any other celebrity.
- As a Pakistani, we have a unique culture. We are neither Indians nor Turkish, we are Pakistanis and our TV Channels should show our culture rather than promoting Indian, Turkish or any other culture. Stop propagating that Indian and Pakistani cultures are the same when they are NOT. Our media should be promoting Pakistani culture as the culture of a unique independent country rather than mixing it with the Indian culture.
- Promote Indian contents on Pakistani channels when you get the same from India also. How many Indian TV channels have ever aired any Pakistani content on their channels? Did you ever watch a Pakistani drama serial or movie on any of the Indian channels in the history of India; if not, then why should we do that?
These demands from the people of Pakistan can be enforced on the TV channels by the Government of the people that was elected by the people and that is supposed to be for the people. The Government has to ensure that the media of Pakistan should represent the people of Pakistan, and if any legislation is required for doing this, it is the responsibility of the members of the Parliament elected by the people to bring that to the National Assembly. Media is the horse that needs to be controlled now, before it becomes uncontrollable for the Government. The Government will have to take the reins of this horse in their control and will have to teach this horse how to canter in Pakistan.
