There’s no pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. There’s just a dazzling, multi-colored town that you have to see.
Kampung Pelangi, in Randusari in south Semarang, gave itself a colorful renovation in hopes of attracting more tourists. Judging by the stunning Instagram fodder, they’re on track to succeed.
According to Lonely Planet, the village, originally named Kampung Wonosari, was given aid and a government budget to paint 223 homes a minimum of three colors each. Many homes boast going above and beyond the color minimum, though.
In addition, 3D drawings decorate walls and bridges and benches also got a color treatment.
A budget of 300 million Rp was given to the town, as reported by Lonely Planet. The Indonesian Builders Association in Semarang also provided aid, donating paint and workers. The project was completed in April 2017. Mayor of Semarang, Hendrar Prihadi, helped with the painting himself, as well.
Ultimately, the project will hopefully extend to a total of 390 houses in Semarang. Locals have been selling food and souvenirs to the increasing numbers of visitors since the project was completed.
But Kampung Pelangi is not the only town in Indonesia with a rainbow theme. Another town, Kampung Wisata Jodipan, which is located in Malang, also completed a town beautification project in September 2016. The two towns are about 240 miles away from each other.
Kampung Wisata Jodipan is also known as Kampung Warna Warni, which means “colorful.” Which, if you look for pictures of the town, you won’t be surprised by the moniker.
The two towns have been increasingly popular with photo enthusiasts.
