BERLIN: According to two people who are familiar with the situation, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has decided to send Leopard 2 battle tanks to Ukraine and allows other nations, such as Poland, to do the same, while the United States may supply Abrams tanks.
According to Spiegel magazine, which first reported the news, the decision concerns at least one company of Leopard 2 A6 tanks that will be provided from Bundeswehr stocks. 14 tanks typically make up a company.
“The German Chancellor made a hard-hitting decision today. According to the t-online news portal, Christian Duerr, parliamentary leader of the co-governing Free Democrats (FDP), said, “The fact that Germany will support Ukraine with the Leopard tank is a strong sign of solidarity.”
“The leopard has been freed!” The vice president of the Bundestag, Katrin Goering-Eckardt, tweeted a link to a news report.
According to the publication, other allies, including Scandinavia, intend to cooperate with Germany in providing Kyiv with their Leopard tanks.
According to the magazine, additional tanks could be restored to operational condition in the long run.
In an effort to persuade Germany to follow suit, officials in Washington reported that the United States may soon abandon its opposition to the deployment of Abrams tanks in Ukraine.
